The Origin of War=Penis

I really enjoyed seeing all of the Xerox projects-well done everyone! Class was especially interesting, performance art is an art I am very unaccustomed with seeing. I don’t like the whole throwing up/eating feces/hurting yourself. However, I can very much appreciate the art exposed in the viewer reaction. This art seems to play on many aspects of society and in turn how society will interpret the art. I really loved “O Superman” by Laurie Anderson, I love most things involving a syth. I’m listening to it right now and it reminds me of Imogen Heap, I think it is really brilliant and her performance just adds to the strangeness of it. Gilbert and George’s pieces were hysterical and fresh. I thought it was pretty interesting that these grandfather-like men were posing nude and were also gay lovers. I read online a bit about them and I saw that many of their pictures were first produced black and white and then they went in and hand colored them. The colors really pop out at you (along with their penises). What a sense of humor these two had. I am so glad Santiago shared this with us; it added some needed comedy to my day. Orlan reminds me of Edna in “The Incredibles”, mostly just her look.

Now here is an interesting character, full of sexuality and strangeness. One theme in my Xerox project was the manipulation of the body through means of cosmetic surgery. Watching Orlan in class perfectly complemented the meaning of my project. I cannot imagine wanting to be conscious during a plastic surgery but she surely pushed the envelope. On Grey’s Anatomy there is a major surgery in which a patient requests to be awake. Immediately after viewing Orlan’s awake surgery I thought of this episode.

  1. hahah. awesome title (shooo twueee)! so, i loved how there was a brain oozing out in your project and a highlighter was popping out of it!! your project reminded me of the mental image of what is going through a young persona's mind (plastic surgery, $, fitness, beauty/perfection). i really enjoyed your piece and that there was a lot of good symbolism.

  2. Orlan really does look like Edna! haha I really like the theme of your project with the images of perfection and commercialism we face these days...my favorite part is where you drew the plastic surgery lines on your face--very creative! You did a great job!

  3. I really like your use of color in your project. Your canvas is really busy but it works really well. I like your use of the dollar bills and how you cut your head open, very creative!

  4. I like the way you used the ideas covered in Dada to really explore what beauty is. You were definitely effective in decontextualizing the body with the ideas of enhancers and plastic surgery.

  5. ahahaha so your xerox project was great, it stood out against everyone elses because you didnt cover the whole thing in your body parts, but i think that the post that goes along with this is HILARIOUS

  6. I like how you used different details to mess around with your scans, like how you made your brain coming out with a highlighter in it.

ALSO Edna and Orlan are so alike! I didn't even think about it, but love the connection.

  7. Wow, there is a lot of layers (figuratively and literally) to this piece. The advertisement background, coupled with the cash flowing to the side, and the scans of your hands and face make for a very visually appealing piece. I love the brain being impaled by the highlighter. Your theme of cosmetic surgery had me thinking of how surgeons first take a marker and highlight areas that they can fix for the patient. The image of the highlighter through the brain made me think that when people pursue cosmetic surgery, they are not looking to change their physical bodies, they are trying to change their mental view of their bodies.
